It fits around the S-camshaft where it passes through the brake spider, preventing grease from the wheel bearings from contaminating the brake shoes and keeping dirt and moisture out. Over time, heat and wear can cause the old seal to crack or harden, leading to brake contamination and potential failure. Replacing this seal is a standard step during brake shoe replacement or any time the camshaft is removed.
