When the brake pedal is applied, the slack adjuster rotates this shaft, causing the S-shaped head to push the brake shoes outward against the drum. Camshafts are replaced when the splines or head wear down, or when the shaft seizes in the spider bracket, which can lead to uneven braking or brake drag. This particular cam is designed for a 16.5-inch brake assembly and measures approximately 17-3/8 inches in length with a 1-1/2 inch journal diameter.
