It rotates inside the brake assembly to convert the push from the brake chamber into the spreading force that pushes the brake shoes against the drum, slowing the vehicle. This left-hand version is designed for the left side of the axle and has a specific rotation direction opposite to the right-hand camshaft. You replace a camshaft when the splines are worn, the bearing journals are scored, or the head is damaged, which can cause uneven braking, noise, or brake drag. The WC176L is a generic left-hand camshaft for trailer axles; exact fitment depends on effective length, spline count, and brake drum diameter.
