The S-cam rotates when the brake chamber pushrod moves the slack adjuster, spreading the brake shoes apart against the drum to slow the vehicle. Over time, camshaft bushings wear or the cam head itself can wear or crack, requiring replacement to maintain even braking and safe operation. It fits a 28-spline slack adjuster and is commonly used in trailer brake rebuilds.
