It combines a service brake chamber for normal braking with a powerful spring-activated parking/emergency brake section. When you apply the parking brakes or lose air pressure, the heavy spring mechanically engages the brakes, holding the vehicle safely. You typically replace these chambers when they develop air leaks, the internal spring weakens, the pushrod becomes bent or the clevis/pin holes wear out, causing excessive stroke or dragging brakes.
