It protects the A/C compressor by cutting power if the refrigerant pressure gets too high (typically over 330-370 PSI) or too low due to a refrigerant leak or cold ambient temperatures. Once the pressure returns to a safe range, it automatically resets, allowing the compressor to run again. You would replace this switch if your A/C compressor clutch is not engaging, the system is short-cycling, or you've diagnosed a faulty pressure switch preventing normal operation.
