It measures the temperature of fluids such as engine oil or coolant and sends that reading to the engine control module (ECM), which uses the data to adjust fuel delivery, timing, and cooling fan operation. A faulty sensor can cause poor fuel economy, incorrect gauge readings, or engine protection derates, so it is replaced when readings become erratic or fail diagnostic trouble codes. It is commonly installed into threaded ports in the oil cooler housing or cylinder head.
