It is used in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems found on most modern medium and heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment. When injected into the exhaust stream, DEF helps convert harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. You replace it whenever the DEF tank runs low—your truck's dash gauge will alert you, and running out can derate engine power or prevent starting.
