Torque arms—also called torque rods or radius rods—connect the axle to the trailer’s spring hangers and prevent the axle from moving forward or backward under acceleration and braking. A rigid torque arm uses a fixed-length steel bar with bushings at each end; it is used where a solid, consistent axle alignment is preferred, such as on city delivery trailers that see frequent stops, tight turns, and lighter overall loads. The part is replaced when the rubber bushings degrade, which can cause axle misalignment, uneven tire wear, thumping noises, or wandering.
