Inside a drum brake, the 28-spline shaft rotates when the slack adjuster pulls it, forcing the brake shoes outward against the drum to slow the vehicle. Replace it when the cam head is worn, the splines are damaged, or as part of a full brake overhaul to maintain consistent stopping power.
