It converts the linear push of the air brake chamber into rotational force to spread the brake shoes against the drum. The shaft features a 1‑5/8 inch diameter bearing journal, a 37‑spline end for the slack adjuster, and a 1‑3/8 inch thick cam head. The effective length from under the head to the snap ring groove is 16‑1/8 inches. Replacement is typically required when the cam head, bearing surfaces, or splines show excessive wear, pitting, or corrosion, or during a complete brake overhaul.
