It secures the leaf spring stack to the axle housing using two 3/4-inch diameter grade-8 bolts that straddle a 3-1/2-inch-wide spring pack, with a leg length of 5-1/8 inches. You'd replace these U-bolts whenever the original U-bolts show signs of stretching, corrosion, or during spring or axle component replacement.
