It keeps gear oil inside the hub and stops dirt, water, and debris from getting to the bearings. These seals are replaced as part of regular wheel-end maintenance whenever a hub is disassembled or a leak appears. This seal is a direct cross to the Stemco 372-7099 Grit Guard set, but it is the seal only; the Stemco set also includes an axle ring.
