It is the unlined metal shoe that you return as a core when purchasing a remanufactured or new lined brake shoe. The shoe fits 16.5-inch diameter by 8.625-inch wide brakes, commonly used on semi-truck and trailer axles. When your brake linings wear down, you replace the shoe assembly, and this core is what the rebuilder uses to apply new lining.
