A core is the bare, worn brake shoe assembly that you return for remanufacturing to get a credit—it's the metal foundation and backing plate that gets relined with new friction material. Fleet operators purchase this as a core deposit placeholder when buying replacement brake shoe kits, or as a blank core to send out for custom relining. The 4692Q shoe kit itself fits 23,000-pound-rated axles with 12.25-inch by 7.5-inch drum brakes. You'd replace the complete shoes when friction linings are worn to their minimum thickness, the shoes are heat-damaged or cracked, or to meet DOT inspection requirements.
