It uses a double-lip nitrile rubber sealing element with a spring to retain oil inside the hub while keeping dirt, water, and contaminants out. It is typically replaced when a wheel seal begins to leak, during brake or hub service, or whenever the wheel end is disassembled. The seal fits axles with a 4.250-inch shaft and a 6.048-inch bore, common on many 22,500 lb trailer axles and similar heavy-duty applications.
