It converts compressed air into mechanical force to apply the brakes, and the long-stroke design provides extra pushrod travel to compensate for brake wear. You typically replace it when the internal spring weakens, the diaphragm leaks, or the housing becomes corroded, which can cause brake dragging or loss of parking brake function. It's built with a heavy-gauge steel housing and a double O-ring seal to resist dirt and moisture.
