Its main job is to automatically switch the air supply from the primary (rear) to the secondary (front) brakes in the event of a primary circuit pressure loss, which helps maintain controlled braking during a failure. It also serves as a relay valve on a spring-brake equipped axle, using air from the secondary circuit to release the spring brakes for a temporary 'limp-home' capability. This particular model is calibrated to open its inlet at 45 PSI descending pressure and open the exhaust at 60 PSI ascending pressure.
