It is an O-ring style seal that fits into a groove in the cover to keep lubricating oil inside the PTO housing and prevent dirt and contaminants from entering. When this seal wears out, oil can leak from the PTO, leading to low lubrication, overheating, and eventual damage to internal gears. Replacing it restores the oil containment and helps maintain proper operation of the PTO.
