It controls the air-operated range (high/low) and splitter functions, allowing the driver to access all gears. Over time, the valve can develop air leaks or fail to shift between ranges, making the truck difficult to drive—replacement restores proper shifting. The valve has five 1/16-inch NPT air ports and mounts with 1/2-13 threads.
