It has two main functions: it supplies service and emergency air to the trailer when the red trailer air supply knob is pushed in, and it automatically shuts off air to the trailer to apply the emergency brakes if a leak, breakaway, or rapid pressure loss occurs. This valve should be replaced when it leaks air, fails to maintain constant trailer pressure, or causes repeated system drop-outs.
