It mounts to the wheel hub and encloses the brake shoes; when you apply the brakes, the shoes press outward against the inside of this drum to slow or stop the vehicle. Drums like this are replaced when the friction surface becomes scored, cracked, or worn beyond the maximum safe diameter, which can cause reduced braking power or fade. As a balanced drum, it helps minimize vibration and promote even lining wear on the axle.
