Its main job is to control the flow of fuel and act as a safety device: if the piping is sheared off in an accident, the valve automatically slams shut to prevent a massive spill. It also includes a fusible plug that melts in a fire (at 212°F) to close the valve and a manual jack screw so you can offload product even if you lose air pressure.
