When the tow vehicle's brake controller sends power, this electromagnet is attracted to the spinning brake drum, which mechanically pushes the brake shoes outward to slow the trailer. It is a common wear item that should be replaced whenever the brake shoes are replaced or if you notice reduced braking force. Replacing these in full axle sets (both left and right) is recommended to maintain even braking.
