The packing gland compresses the packing rings around the pump shaft to create a seal and prevent fluid leakage. It should be replaced when the gland becomes worn, cracked, or corroded to the point that adjusting the packing can no longer stop a leak, or if the gland is damaged during pump maintenance. The part is cast iron and fits the stuffing box of the designated pump models.
