It is injected into the exhaust stream of diesel engines equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. DEF is a consumable fluid—you refill it when the DEF gauge indicates low level, typically every few thousand miles depending on usage, to prevent engine derate or shutdown and to maintain compliance with EPA emissions standards.
