The roller sits in the shoe web and rides against the S-cam head; as the cam turns, it pushes the shoes against the drum to brake. Normal wear gradually increases clearance between the cam and the roller, leading to dragging, uneven shoe wear, or shortened stroke. A 1/8" oversize roller restores proper cam-roller contact, extending shoe life and improving brake balance. It is commonly replaced during shoe relining or when inspection shows excessive clearance.
