It fits over the slider lock pin and provides the force needed to keep the pin disengaged from the rail when the driver pulls the release handle, then helps the pin snap back into a locked position once the tandems are slid to the desired location. These springs are replaced when the original becomes weak, corroded, or broken, which can prevent the slider pins from fully locking into the rail holes—a major safety issue.
