This is a forged SAE 2-inch trailer king pin designed for a 1/2-inch thick bolster plate. It serves as the pivot point that couples a trailer to a fifth-wheel hitch on a tractor, allowing the trailer to articulate. The part is typically welded onto the trailer's upper coupler assembly. It is replaced when the king pin becomes worn, scored, or damaged, which can impair safe coupling.
