It serves as a thermal protection device for pneumatic or hydraulic systems on cargo tank trailers, primarily chemical trailers. When exposed to elevated temperatures (between 200°F and 250°F), the solder core inside the plug melts, which relieves line pressure and allows emergency shut-off valves to close automatically. It is commonly replaced if the solder has extruded past the face of the plug, or as a preventative measure to ensure the thermal safety system functions correctly.
