Its purpose is to provide a self-closing stop valve at the bottom of the tank to control liquid discharge. It is designed to automatically shear and seal closed in the event of an accident or under-ride, and includes a fusible plug that dumps air pressure to close the valve if temperatures exceed 212°F, complying with DOT HM183 safety requirements. It also features a manual jackscrew override for closing if the air system fails.
