It is installed in the bottom sump of petroleum tank trailers (MC-306/DOT-406) to control product flow during loading and unloading. The valve opens when air pressure is applied to its internal 3-inch air cylinder and automatically closes if the air supply is lost, if the intake piping shears in an under-ride accident (meeting 49CFR178.345-8), or if a fusible plug melts at 212°F. Replacement is typically needed when the valve leaks, fails to seal, or after an accident activates the shear section.
