It is mounted inside the tank sump and normally held open by air pressure; if the air supply is lost or in an accident, the shear section on the air line causes the valve to slam shut, stopping product flow. A stainless steel jackscrew allows manual operation if the air system fails, and a fusible plug melts at 212°F to automatically close the valve in a fire. This valve is typically replaced when it leaks, fails to hold pressure, or after an accident or routine maintenance.
