The switch is typically replaced when internal contacts corrode, the lever mechanism fails, or it no longer maintains a reliable low-resistance connection. Important: it only breaks the battery circuit and does not disconnect the alternator field, so the engine must be shut off before disconnecting to avoid damage to the alternator diodes.
