It gets welded onto one end of a section of steel tubing (typically 3-inch outside diameter, 0.083-inch wall) to form the yoke that grips the universal joint. This allows the driveshaft to connect the transmission or transfer case to the differential while accommodating angle changes. These yokes are often replaced when a driveshaft is being custom-built, shortened, or repaired after a U-joint failure has damaged the original yoke.
