The S-shaped head converts rotating motion from the slack adjuster into the linear push that forces the brake shoes against the drum, slowing your vehicle. You typically replace it when the cam head wears down, the splines strip, or the journals become scored, which can cause uneven braking or failure. This particular camshaft is designed for 16.5-inch Hendrickson Intraax/HXS and Meritor Q-style trailer brake systems, and works with both enclosed cam tubes and exposed bushing setups.
