A charge air cooler (also known as an aftercooler or intercooler) reduces the temperature of compressed intake air from the turbocharger before it enters the engine, increasing air density for more powerful and efficient combustion, while helping prevent detonation and excessive exhaust gas temperatures. This aftermarket Roppel unit replaces the original cooler on certain heavy-duty trucks when leaks, damage, or internal clogging cause boost loss, overheating, or black smoke. Typically found on the cooling stack in front of the radiator, it uses ambient air flow to shed heat from the aluminum core. Replacement is common after road debris impact, corrosion, or fatigue cracking in the charge-air system.
