It is used to create a watertight or airtight seal in compression fittings on copper, aluminum, or plastic tubing without the need for soldering or flaring. You would replace it when you disconnect or repair a compression fitting, as reusing an old, deformed ferrule generally won't seal properly. It is suitable for water, oil, air, and hydraulic lines but is not intended for potable water or gas connections.
