It uses a half-round, strap-style retainer for an 1810 universal joint, transferring engine torque from the driveshaft into the axle. The splined bore (46 teeth, 2.374-inch major diameter) slides onto the pinion shaft and is secured with a nut. Service shops replace this yoke when the splines are worn, the yoke ears are bent or cracked, or after a U-joint failure.
