It is designed to be welded onto a steel driveshaft tube, connecting the tube to the universal joint so that torque can be transferred from the transmission to the differential. The yoke fits 4-inch outside diameter tubing with a .134-inch wall thickness (some sources also list a .180-inch wall option) and accepts 1710 series u-joints with 1.938-inch bearing caps. It is typically replaced when the original yoke is worn, damaged, or during a custom driveline fabrication or rebuild.
