This is a plastic relief valve plunger (bypass valve) used in Caterpillar engine oil cooler and filter circuits. Normally it stays closed, routing oil through the filter; when the filter becomes clogged, the plunger opens to let oil bypass the filter and continue lubricating the engine, preventing oil starvation. It is replaced if it sticks, wears, or allows bypassing at low restriction—often during oil cooler servicing.
