It is an electrically controlled hydraulic valve that engages or disengages the PTO, typically on Allison automatic transmissions in medium and heavy-duty trucks. When energized, it directs hydraulic pressure to engage the PTO mechanism; when de-energized, the spring returns it to the disengaged position. These solenoids can fail over time due to coil burnout or contamination, causing the PTO to stop working or not engage consistently, which is when replacement is needed.
