When the engine reaches a certain temperature, the valve opens to send air pressure to the fan clutch, engaging the fan to pull cooling air through the radiator. Replacing a faulty solenoid restores proper fan operation, preventing overheating and avoiding unnecessary fuel consumption from a fan that runs constantly.
