When the engine is off, the weighted flap automatically closes to keep rain, snow, and debris from getting into the exhaust system, which can cause corrosion and internal damage. When the engine starts, exhaust pressure pushes the flap open for normal operation. It is typically replaced when the old cap has rusted away, seized up, or broken off due to vibration and weather exposure.
