It screws onto the 3/4"-16 wheel stud of the hub and provides the clamping surface for the inner steel wheel. An outer cap nut then threads onto the exposed outer threads of this inner nut to secure the outer wheel. These nuts are typically replaced when the threads are worn, corroded, or damaged, or as part of routine wheel-end maintenance to maintain proper clamping force and prevent wheel loss.
