It is designed to be welded into a 3.500-inch outer diameter, 0.083-inch wall thickness steel tube, typically serving as the middle section of a two‑piece driveshaft or as a slip yoke end. The shaft transfers torque from the transmission to the drive axle, and its splines allow the driveshaft to change length as the suspension moves. This component should be replaced when the splines exhibit excessive wear, galling, or looseness, which can cause vibration and eventual driveline failure.
