It has a D-shaped inner hole that aligns with a flat spot on the spindle, and bendable tabs that lock into the slots of a castle nut. This design secures the spindle nut in place, replacing the need for a cotter pin in many axle systems. Tang washers are commonly found on 1-inch spindles with EZ-Lube or Posi-Lube style hubs.
