When excessive current or a locked-rotor condition causes overheating, the relay trips and opens the circuit, preventing damage to motors, blowers, or other components. In heavy-duty trucks, thermal relays are often found in fan clutch circuits, HVAC blower motor protection, or auxiliary motor controls. They are replaced when a motor repeatedly overheats or fails to start, or if the relay itself fails to reset.
