It sits behind the camshaft thrust plate at the front of the engine to prevent pressurized oil from leaking out around the camshaft nose. Over time the original seal can harden, crack, or take a set, leading to oil seepage at the front cover. Replacing this seal is standard practice during a front engine overhaul, camshaft replacement, or anytime you disturb the thrust plate on an S60.
