An idler pulley is a component that maintains tension and guides the serpentine or V-belt on a heavy‑duty truck engine. It routes the belt around accessories like the alternator, water pump, or air compressor, and absorbs belt slack to prevent slippage. Over time the internal bearing can wear, leading to squealing, belt misalignment, or catastrophic failure, so it is replaced when it becomes noisy, seized, or the belt shows uneven wear.
